Let's go Ajaccio and Southern Corsica

Jumping on-board a Marseille-Ajaccio ferry, means heading off to one of the favourite holiday destinations for the French: Corsica.

As soon as you arrive in the port of Ajaccio, you'll be charmed by the Island of Beauty and its scenescapes. Beaches, creeks, cliffs and mountains are a pure delight for nature lovers.

It's also a land overflowing with history and culture, birthplace of great historical figures and source of inspiration for numerous artists.

An island boasting many different facets

Corsica may be French, yet it's geographically closer to Italy. Its coastline is less than 100 kilometres from Tuscany and it's only a dozen kilometres from Sardinia.

This adjacency played a key role in this Mediterranean island's destiny. It was attached to the Republic of Genoa from 1284 to 1768 and was finally handed over to France after the downfall of the Republic of Corsica.

Corsica weathered these events yet kept its cultural particularities, like its language and its desire to be independent. Today, it's a one-of-a-kind French territorial collectivity with its own executive council, an assembly and an economic, social and cultural council.

Natural, cultural and gastronomic treasures

Corsica boasts spectacular panoramas galore. So, as soon as you leave the Marseille-Ajaccio ferry, head off and discover the island and its landscapes!

The coastline is fringed with white sandy beaches, pebbly creeks and cliffs that plunge into turquoise water. Villages and forests are strewn everywhere around the mountains inland.

The contrast between the different natural sites is highlighted by varied vegetation, which changes with altitude. Take time out and explore the flora along the seaboard, across the maquis, up in the mountains, where hosts of crocuses, orchids and violets will wow you. These flowers have developed varieties that only exist on the Island of Beauty.

There are also several sites where you can observe protected animal species and species that are native to the region. Corsica Regional Nature Park and nature reserves are home to falcons, eagles and an array of cormorants. And, when it comes to coral, groupers and moray eels, they're just waiting to be admired during an underwater dive.

Corsica's also the place-to-be for lovers of good food. For sure, the restaurant on-board the Marseille-Ajaccio ferry will have whet your appetite for Corsican gastronomy , but a myriad of specialities await you during your stay: cold cuts, cheeses, wines as well as cakes and bouillabaisse. They reflect the richness of the land and of its traditions.
