Hazardous materials and special shipments
Carrying freight to Corsica is La Méridionale's historic business.
Its expertise and know-how mean it can carry hazardous materials as well as oversized and special loads in optimal conditions of safety and security.
Hazardous materials
The carriage of hazardous materials is governed by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG). It applies to ships carrying hazardous materials (with an explosion or fire hazard for example) and materials that could cause pollution.
La Méridionale applies the rules of the IMDG Code scrupulously on-board its ships to ensure the safety of its passengers, seagoing staff, freight carried and the ship itself.
These rules are complemented by the rigorous implementation of measures on the parking of hazardous materials at the dock prior to their carriage.
Book a freight crossing for hazardous materials
All requests for booking must be made in writing, mentioning:
- Product identification
- Its class;
- Its UN number;
- Its packaging group.
La Méridionale also gives its agreement in writing
A duly completed multimodal dangerous goods form must reach us by the morning of departure so we may inform port authorities in the departure and arrival ports as well as the CODIS (Departmental Fire and Rescue Operations Centre). It must include the following specifications:
- UN code;
- Class of the product to be carried;
- Packaging group;
- Technical datasheet.
Special shipments
Our ships can accommodate special shipments:
- Oversized vehicles;
- Carriage of live animals;
- Rendering;
- Unaccompanied rolling stock;
- Carriage of temperature-controlled cargo.
Oversized vehicles
La Méridionale operates ro-ro ships that only carry accompanied and unaccompanied rolling stock.
At the time of booking, please inform us of the dimensions of your vehicle. They are required to draw up the quote.
To assess the feasibility of your shipment, please send a detailed sketch specifying the length, width, height, weight and axle spacing to the freight department of your departure port.
Carriage of live animals
The carriage of live animals on-board La Méridionale ships is possible in certain conditions.
For carrying horses, depending on your destination, a disinsectization certificate for your vehicle (van or livestock hauler) must be provided by competent veterinary services.

Rendering
It is possible to carry animal carcasses on our ships. For reasons of hygiene, safety and security, the packaging of these products must comply with packaging requirements: sealed and temperature-controlled containers.
Unaccompanied rolling stock
You may ship unaccompanied rolling stock, i.e. without a haulier. This may include:
- Trucks
- Rolling stock units
- Dry or refrigerated trailers
- Commercial vehicles
Once the freight ticket has been issued, our staff will take charge of your vehicle, lash it on-board and unload it at the port of arrival.
During the crossing, to ensure the safety and security of the cargo and the ship, each vehicle is stowed on the ship deck with chains.
For trailers, trestles (support stands) are added to ensure more secure stability.
