Located in the heart of the A.O.P. Patrimonio and A.O.P. Muscat du Cap Corse production area, in the Conca d’Oru region listed among the Grands Sites de France, Domaine Gentile extends across around thirty hectares of hillside vineyards.
Here, three key values prevail: tradition, quality and expertise. From its creation in the 1970s, the Gentile family chose to combine organic wine production with the preservation of tradition, the distinctive character of Corsican grape varieties and the local terroir.
At La Méridionale, we are proud to be the leading shipping company to serve this wine on board our vessels. Our partnership with the Domaine Gentile is fully aligned with our commitment to responsible, high-quality catering, showcasing the work of Corsican producers. We met with Jean-Paul Gentile, the current owner of the estate, to learn more about the specific features of his eco-responsible wine production.
Jean-Paul, you are the owner of Domaine Gentile. Could you briefly tell us the story of this family-run estate?
Jean-Paul: "My parents founded Domaine Gentile around 50 years ago on family-owned land. They planted the first vines in 1968 with the ambition of creating a high-quality wine that respected the unique character of Patrimonio wines. The estate’s first vintage was bottled in 1973. We initially owned around ten hectares and now cultivate approximately thirty.
As for me, I did not originally work in the wine industry. I eventually decided to return to my studies and retrain as an oenology engineer. In 1994, I came back to Patrimonio to work alongside my parents and take over the estate, continuing the environmentally conscious and consumer-focused approach they had already established. We have always worked according to organic farming principles, which allowed us to obtain official certification as soon as it was introduced in 2010."
This certification involves complying with many regulations, including the prohibition of chemical products to protect the vines. Yet grape cultivation is particularly delicate. How did you adapt your production methods to obtain organic wine certification?
Jean-Paul: "Organic wine production varies greatly from one region to another. We are located in the Conca d’Oru area of Haute-Corse and are fortunate to benefit from exceptional climatic conditions: wind and sunshine, which make organic production easier than in many other regions.
To obtain certification, most of the work involves prophylaxis, meaning preventive measures designed to avoid the need for treatments later on. However, Domaine Gentile’s approach goes even further because we are also committed to reducing our carbon footprint. For example, we use tractors as little as possible and favour manual work whenever we can. For us, it is obvious that environmental responsibility must be applied throughout the entire process, not just to the final product."
These exceptional weather conditions, combined with Corsica’s unique geology, provide a particularly rich diversity of grape varieties. Which ones do you cultivate at Domaine Gentile?
Jean-Paul: "We work with three grape varieties: Malvoisie for white wine, Niellucciu for red and rosé wines, and Muscat Petits Grains for dessert wines. Each has its own characteristics. Malvoisie is a highly expressive grape variety with remarkable elegance and a linear structure that provides excellent length on the palate.
Niellucciu is more rustic, with a ruby colour and a well-defined tannic structure. Muscat Petits Grains is softer and more aromatic, making it possible to produce wines such as Muscat and Rappu. We harvest entirely by hand and use a sorting table, which allows us to keep only the finest tannins that linger pleasantly on the palate and pair perfectly with food."
Speaking of food, what pairings would you recommend for each of your wines?
Jean-Paul: "Our white wines pair particularly well with grilled fish, shellfish and cheese. Rosés are very versatile and can accompany fish, grilled meats, pasta dishes, charcuterie and salads. Red wines are best enjoyed with meat dishes, including game such as wild boar, and rich dishes served with sauce."
Your wines have been featured on the menus of La Méridionale’s restaurants for several years now, enhancing the dishes prepared on board. How did this partnership begin?
Jean-Paul: "We have been working together for about ten years now. Above all, it is a story of people meeting. I spoke with team members involved in both catering and purchasing at La Méridionale, and I was impressed by both the quality of their work and their values.
I genuinely need to work with people I appreciate and who share my vision. La Méridionale is a trusted and respected company within its sector."
Thank you, Jean-Paul, for sharing your passion and your vision of wine production that respects both nature and tradition. Is it possible for visitors to tour the estate and learn more?
Jean-Paul: "Of course! The best option is to make an appointment by phone or email. You can find our contact details on the Domaine Gentile website, and depending on my availability, I would be delighted to show you the vineyards and the winery.
Visitors are also welcome to come directly to the cellar for a tasting session and to purchase wines from the estate. The cellar is open every day from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. and from 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. No appointment is required for this."
